Invicta Films Goes to Cannes
A note from latamcinema.com
A full delegation made up of nearly a hundred professionals will seek out international ties at the Marché du Film. The Cinema México stand will be the traditional point of reference and, this year, will see its space expanded to host work meetings of Mexican producers and delegates. As part of its public relations strategy, IMCINE will host a series of meetings with key industry figures at the international level. Among the scheduled institutional activities, the Inter-Institutional Protocol for Support of Co-Production and Co-Distribution between Argentina and Mexico will be signed, an agreement that the Mexican authority signed with Brazil during the last Berlinale; and the Pantalla CACI digital platform, run by the Conference of Ibero-American Film Authorities (CACI), and the Cinema México digital system, will be launched.
Along with Brazil, Colombia and Argentina, Mexico will be the Latin American country with the greatest representation in the Producers Network, a platform that will dedicate its Sunday, May 17 session to the eleven Mexican producers: Cinema Maquina, Zensky Cine, Zoología Fantástica, Tuya Films, Invicta Films, Film Tank, Avanti Pictures, Phototaxia Pictures, Fogata Audiovisual, Itaca Films, Varios Lobos and Traziende Films. The Producers Workshop training space will also have Mexican representation through the young producer Juan Olivares Villegas. Cinema Maquina takes part in France with two films in development: “Muchacho de campo” by Alfredo Marrón and “Cuernavaca” by Alejandro Andrade Pease (in production); while Invicta will seek international co-production for the family comedy “Cuando los hijos regresan” and partners for three other projects in development: the thriller “San Miguel” by Gerry de León, “Caravana” by Claudia González-Rubio, and the period romance “Quererte fue mi castigo.” For its part, Phototaxia Pictures arrives with three projects in development: “Aquí estoy yo” by Alfonso Pineda Ulloa in co-production with Colombia; “Entrevero,” made jointly with Uruguay under the direction of Max Zunino; and “Multiple Personality Disorder,” directed by the Dane Martin Wichmann Andersen in co-production with the United States. NDM, the international arm of Mantarraya, will be promoting “600 millas” by Gabriel Ripstein. For its part, Mundial will be representing “Mr. Pig,” Diego Luna’s new film in post-production. Vendo Cine, another of the most active players on the international field, arrives with a lineup of new Mexican cinema that includes the features “Asteroide” by Marcelo Tobar and “González” by Christian Díaz Pardo, along with the documentary “Los reyes del pueblo que no existe” by Betzabé García. Festivals are reinforcing their role in the machinery of the industry by strengthening their international networks, and the directors of the Los Cabos, Mérida and Yucatán, Guanajuato, FICUNAM and Guadalajara (FICG) festivals will be at the Marché in search of new alliances and programming. Indeed, the FICG’s industry space, Guadalajara Construye, debuts in the Marché’s “Goes to Cannes” series by promoting three projects in post-production: “El peluquero romántico” by Iván Ávila Dueñas, produced by Artemécanica; “Los parecidos” by Isaac Ezban, produced by Yellow Films; and “Almacenados” by Jack Zagha, produced by Avanti Cine. This series of special showcases of projects in development will also be joined by the Ecuador-Mexico co-production “UIO: sácame a pasear” by Micaela Rueda, and the documentary “Tierra caliente” by Laura Plancarte (Mexico–Great Britain). In 2016 this series of special “Goes to Cannes” showcases will add a new partner: the Los Cabos Festival. The announcement of the agreement, which will select four new Mexican films in post-production to be shown to industry professionals, will be made on May 17. “This collaboration with the Marché du Film will allow us to strengthen our goal of supporting and being the platform for bold Mexican filmmakers who dare to participate on the international stage,” said Alonso Aguilar-Castillo, director of the Los Cabos Festival. The special screenings promoted by the Argentine genre film market Blood Window include “Scherzo diabólico” by Adrián García Bogliano, produced by Salto de Fe Films, and the Mexican-Argentine co-production “Testigo íntimo” by Santiago Fernández Calvete.
In the screenings, Mexico will be present with “La delgada línea amarilla” by Celso García, represented by Latido; “600 Millas” by Gabriel Ripstein; “Eisenstein in Guanajuato” by Peter Greenaway, promoted by Films Boutique; and the children’s animated films brought by the Argentine company Filmsharks, “El americano” by Ricardo Arnaiz and Mike Kunkel and “Guardianes de Oz” by Alberto Mar. In addition, The Open Reel is showcasing “Carmín Tropical” by Rigoberto Perezcano and “Estrellas solitarias” by Fernando Urdapilleta; Multivisionnaire Pictures is promoting “Decadencia” by Joaquín Rodríguez; and Stray Dogs is promoting “Me quedo contigo” by Artemio Narro.
